In 1918, the P.F. Volland Company published "The Raggedy
Ann Stories" by artist and storyteller Johnny Gruelle.
Thus, the whimsical and endearing doll that was to become
a favorite American icon was introduced to the world.
Johnny Gruelle created Raggedy Ann in 1915 from the
inspiration of watching his daughter, Marcella, playing with
an old rag doll that had been discovered in the attic. And so
a father’s love gave birth to an artistic representation of
kindness and compassion that has grown for 85 years.
