As a war correspondent journalist, he’d been in China, at Guadalcanal, with the Navy in the Pacific, and in Africa to accompany the American invasion forces to Sicily. This book grew out of the latter experience., This was Hersey’s first novel, the forerunner of many successful Hersey books of fiction to follow. The brown hardcover has a darker brown embossed drawing of an Italian building on the front cover and a bell and lettering in gilt on the spine.
